The healing properties of salt has been shared by many ancient and modern civilizations. Dating back to ancient China, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, salt has been used for various remedies, rituals, protection and cures. In 460 B.C, Hippocrates began recommending salt inhalation as a respiratory treatment and would use natural salt and water on the skin to cure skin diseases. Around 100AD a Roman doctor named Dioskurides would mix salt with substances such as vinegar, wine or honey for digestive remedies and skin diseases.

Fast forward to the 19th century, a Polish physician named Dr Felix Boczkowski discovered that men working in the salt mines at Wieliczka suffered fewer respiratory problems than the general population. He attributed this to the salt particles being inhaled by the miners in the underground environment.

During World War II, the Klutert salt caves in the German town of Ennepetal were used as shelter against heavy bombing. People remained in the caves for prolonged periods, breathing in the salt dust. In 1949, German physician Dr. K.H. Spannahel noticed that those who had taken shelter in the salt mines appeared to have experienced relief from their respiratory problems.

In 1980, the Odessa Science Research Institute in Ukraine developed the first Halotherapy device. The machine replicated the grinding and crushing of salt and dispersed the particles into the air to model the conditions of an underground salt mine. Thus, modern salt therapy (or ‘Halotherapy’) was born.

After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Halotherapy began emerging outside eastern Europe and is now gaining popularity across the western world as a complementary therapy to aid respiratory and skin conditions, athletic performance and general health and wellbeing.
Today you can find salt centres all across Australia. Designed to emulate the effects of being in a real salt cave, without having to descend deep into the earth, they are utilized by may people seeking relief from respiratory conditions such as asthma, hay fever, sinusitis, croup, and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

If you want to discover the health benefits of salt, Salts of the Earth have a new introductory offer – Unlimited sessions for 4 weeks for only $99*. Book in for your free consultation and get ready to take a step back into the ancient and natural practice of good health.

*Available at all centres excluding; Caroline Springs, Frankston, Moonee Ponds & Torquay.

Salt has gotten a bad wrap over the years. According to a lot of diet ‘experts’, salt will not only make you fat, but it will also kick you in the shins, burn down your house, and RUIN YOUR LIFE.

Well, great news, friends. Salt ain’t that bad at all. In fact, not only does salt have a variety of health benefits, but a certain level of it is necessary for human bodies to function.

Let’s chat about it, shall we?

Salt aids blood-sugar control.

A healthy level of sodium in the diet is required to maintain insulin levels. Those cutting out salt completely have been found to be more susceptible to diabetes and other health issues.

Salt improves sleep quality.

If you’ve ever had a few sleepless nights in a row, you’ll be well aware of how important sleep is to good health. Salt in the diet can surpress stress hormones, improving the quality of sleep, while regular salt therapy can help the lung and circulatory systems function better, creating deeper and more beneficial sleeping patterns.

Salt lowers adrenalin.

Sure, we all love a good adrenalin rush. But adrenalin is actually a stress hormone, so there certainly can be too much of a good thing. A low-sodium diet can lead to increased adrenalin, which then leads to poor sleep and ill health. A healthy amount of sodium helps keep the adrenal gland in check.

Salt can improve skin conditions.

Regular salt therapy (such as at Salts of the Earth) can aid in the relief of symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, and other skin conditions. The natural properties of the salty air help to reduce inflammation and relieve itchiness, dryness, flaki ness, and other symptoms.

Salt helps balance your belly.

Your body needs a certain amount of salt in the stomach acid to aid with digestion of food. Too much can lead to bloating and water retention, of course, but cutting salt out all together can also lead to digestive issues.
So, when it comes to salt, think of Goldilocks and the three bears. Not too much, not too little – juuuust the right amount of salt.

Grab a pinch of salt and put it on your next meal!

Australia’s Salts of the Earth has been awarded second place in the International Franchise Association’s NextGen competition for their bespoke business model in the salt therapy health industry.

David Lindsay, 34, founded Salts of the Earth in 2010 after seeing first-hand the effects salt therapy had on his father oversees, a long-term sufferer of chronic respiratory illnesses.

“My father tried dozens of medications and unsuccessful surgeries to clear his airways,” Lindsay said. “He did salt therapy as a last resort, and it played a huge role in improving his health and even made his medication more effective.”

Lindsay saw a gap in the Australian market, and knew there would be thousands of people with respiratory and skin conditions, or in need of sports recovery, who could benefit from ongoing therapy.

Salts of the Earth is now Australia’s fifth largest fastest growing franchise^, and Lindsay said being part of the NextGen competition has been a huge asset for the company.

“The competition has provided great exposure for our brand, and an opportunity to showcase our company to some of the largest franchisors in the world,” Lindsay said.

“Our concept and business model are both unique, and we’re fortunate to be the first to market in Australia for salt therapy.”

Salts of the Earth currently partners with 24 franchisees in regional and metro Australia. In 2016 alone the company welcomed over 16 000 new clients.

Lindsay was one of three young entrepreneurs selected to represent Australia by the Franchise Council of Australia.

There’s whispering on the streets of Australia. Excited whispering. Two words, being passed along like a well-kept secret. Salt therapy.

You might have seen it online, or caught a glimpse on one of the morning shows. Perhaps you’ve had a friend with newly-glowing skin telling you about its’ benefits. Or perhaps you haven’t heard the word at all. You better catch up, then.

Everyone is talking about Salts of the Earth, the salt therapy centres popping up in metropolitan areas around Australia. From Megan Gale to Luke Hodge, Australia’s finest are hooked.

Before we show you just what people are saying about salt therapy, here’s a quick run-down of the process. You sit in a reclining massage chair in a quiet, relaxing room for 45 minutes, while breathing in the pharmaceutical grade salt being pumped through the air.

That’s it.

The properties of the natural salt bring a wealth of health benefits, from clearer sinuses to better breathing, from glowing skin to improved sleep.

So what are people saying about it?

Erin Nicholson, a client on the Intensive Management Plan, says “for 5 weeks I was struggling with sinusitis. I was blocked up, had pain in my ears, nose and throat. I tried salt therapy for 5 days straight and I cannot believe the change. My pressure headaches have gone and no pain in my ears. I can breathe better and I’m sleeping much better as well! I loved the salt therapy and would definitely recommend having a go at it.”

And don’t forget about the kiddies.

“My daughter Jasmine, who is 8 years old, has had a consistent cough for about 9 months now.” Says Meegan George on a Child Management Plan. “I turned to Salts of the Earth as Jasmine mentioned to me that she had a salt lamp in her school room that helped minimize her cough. The results have been amazing. After Jasmine’s first session and a salt lamp in her room I saw a marked reduction in her coughing, she was sleeping better and felt better too! I also love going with Jasmine to Salts of the Earth as I find the sessions very relaxing – a great treat for us busy parents!! The staff are wonderful and very welcoming, especially to children. I would recommend Salts of the Earth to anyone with respiratory issues.”

Much as Andrew Davey relishes the success of his growing Salts of the Earth salt therapy franchise, it’s the happy and healthy customer stories and community participation that really make his day.
And it’s this approach that has contributed to his major win at the recent Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) Vic/Tas awards.
Andrew and his team won the 2016 FCA Vic/Tas Franchisee Community Responsibility and Contribution award, and the opportunity to fly to Canberra for the national awards in October.
Since opening in March 2014, his Pakenham salt therapy centre now sees more than 500 customers a week and employs five therapists including himself. However, it’s the days when children and adults with chronic conditions such as eczema and asthma say that due to the salt therapy they’re able to breathe freely and participate fully in their lives, that Andrew lives for.
He recounts one of their many success stories: a young boy with severe eczema whose condition, with the help of regular salt therapy sessions, has improved so much he’s able to wear shorts instead of long pants to school for the first time.
“Every day we see the difference the salt therapy makes, and it makes it all worthwhile,” Andrew says.
His franchise was recognised for its outstanding contribution to the local community in the south-east Melbourne suburbs around Pakenham, where he and his team tirelessly raise funds for health-related children’s charities and causes, as well as for the local fire brigades.
The FCA award is the first time the growing Salts of the Earth franchise has won a major award. Established in 2010 by David Lindsay, Salts of the Earth was the first salt therapy to be introduced to Australia and is now the largest in the country, with 19 operational centres and more opening soon.
Although it is relatively new in Australia, salt therapy is a proven mainstream complementary therapy in Europe, where its use has been traced back to the 18th century. Modern salt therapy involves pharmaceutical-grade salt being finely ground and dispersed through the air.

Good news, you can still eat salt. Just make it GOOD salt.

Salt and vinegar chips. Salted caramel. Salt and pepper calamari.

There are so many delicious foods that involve salt, and yet we have been taught to avoid it, with health-nuts striving to cut sodium out of their diet altogether. In some ways, this is a good idea; table salt (which is 97% chemically produced Sodium Chloride, and 3% tables. Just kidding. But not about the chemically produced 97%…) is definitely not good for the ol’ body. It’s bleached, devoid of all nutrients, and the scary truth is; if you put a saltwater fish in a tank of fresh water mixed with table salt, they will die. And not from out of sheer pleasure. Table salt = bad news.

But here is the good news. You can still eat salt. Just make it GOOD salt.

When table salt was linked to a whole bunch of health problems – heart troubles, kidney problems, stroke – the whole concept of salt got a bad name. But good salt, such as pure Himalayan salt, brings a wealth of essential minerals and nutrients to the body. By using a bit of quality salt in cooking, the necessary sodium levels in the blood stream can be restored, helping with blood pressure, brain function, sleep health, kidney function, irregular heart beat, even cellulite.

CELLULITE, PEOPLE. After all these years of thinking we had to cut out salt to get rid of thigh dimples, it turns out, we might actually need to cut it back in.

Himalayan salt is the purest, most beneficial salt available, forming crystals for 200 million years in the Himalayan ranges. Sound like a treasure from a Disney movie? It sure does. And when you consider the 84 minerals available in a teaspoon of the Himalayan salt, you’ll know why.

So next time you’re standing over the stove, think about adding a pinch of salt. But leave the table salt in the cupboard. The laundry cupboard. Use it for cleaning and scrubbing, because that’s about all it’s good for. Instead, reach for a delicious sprinkle of Himalayan salt, and let your body absorb 200 million years of good health.

Salty high-five.

Salt is the new superhero. Not only because it tastes delicious when sprinkled on a chip, but because of the wealth of health benefits it can bring when you breathe it into your lungs.

Do you remember how your Grandma used to always recommend a ‘good dose of ocean air’ when you had a cold? That old wives’ tale t that salty air can clear the airways is not just an old tale. It’s the truth. Regular salt therapy sessions have an anti-inflammatory effect on swelling in the respiratory tract, and assist to break up mucous and toxins, creating more room for inhaling oxygen. Important, right? Right.

By breaking down the phlegm and build-up in the lungs, salt therapy brings a range of healthy, glow-y benefits, which the regulars will attest to (INSERT LINK). Are you a sports player? Improved breathing means improved performance. Does your partner keep you awake with snoring? Get them into salt therapy sessions. Allergies or asthma? Just like a concentrated dose of ocean air, salt therapy can assist respiratory conditions in a safe, organic, non-invasive way.

Not only is it great for the airways , salt does wonders for the skin as well. The dry salt aerosol particles that are pumped into the salt therapy room can assist with a range of skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema. The anti-inflamatory properties of the salt helps to cleanse the skin and reduce irritation, making it less susceptible to itchiness and infection.

With regular salt therapy sessions, you will discover a healthier, stronger you. Clients have found they are sleeping better, breathing better during exercise, have improved stress levels and overall improvement in their health, and showing off radiant, glowing skin.

And if you don’t believe us, ask some of the clients who have tried. From Megan Gale to Zoe Foster-Blake to high-profile athletes, everyone is singing the praises of salt.
