There’s a lot of lovely things about Spring. The air is getting warmer, the flowers are opening up, people are emerging from their winter hibernations and actually socialising again. But there is a downside. Allergies.

There are a few conditions that can be triggered in springtime. Here’s a quick look at the top three.

Hay Fever

Hay fever is the most obvious and potentially the most annoying condition to be triggered by this time of year. There are more than 10,000 species of grass throwing pollen in the air, and the gentle breeze is bringing it right into the sinuses of hay fever sufferers.

Skin conditions

Eczema, psoriasis and other skin conditions can have a good flare-up in spring time. With all the pollen in the air, and the changes in temperature – which means more sweating, humidity, air conditioning, etc – the skin can really suffer.

Asthma

Emergency rooms in spring can get an influx of patients having asthma attacks. Why? Once again, it’s that pesky pollen. The pollen can result in airway inflammation and worsen underlying asthma, causing all kinds of problems for sufferers.

So with all of these conditions firing up at this time of year, what can sufferers do? Most importantly, get medical advice from a GP to keep everything in check. But along with that, it is well worth trying one excellent natural, drug-free therapy.

Salt therapy.

Sufferers of eczema, psoriasis, hay fever and asthma may experience relief from symptoms with regular salt therapy. At a salt therapy centre, you sit in a comfortable massage chair for 45 minutes and breathe in the pharmaceutical-grade salt pumped through the air. The salt can help improve lung function, clear sinuses, and alleviate skin conditions. Regular salt therapy can assist with better responses to medication, and reduced symptoms from seasonal conditions.

If you’re suffering this spring, book yourself into a salt therapy centre today.

Spring has sprung. For some, that means a beautiful season of bleating lambs and bees buzzing through blossoms. For others, it’s a nightmare of sniffing and wiping watery eyes. Hay fever sufferers, we hear you (literally… we can hear you sneezing from here). Here’s a few tips on how you can prepare for the hay fever season so you don’t have to lock yourself inside.

Check your air conditioners.

With the temperatures starting to rise, air conditioner units in houses, workplaces and cars start going into overdrive. It’s a good idea to check the filters and keep them nice and clean, so you’re not pumping pollen and dust throughout your own area. If you tend to get sneezing attacks in the car, close your air vents or keep them pointed away from your face.

Dry your clothes and sheets indoors.

With all that pesky pollen floating around in the air, leaving your clothes outdoors to dry can lead to itchy skin and allergy symptoms. Keep them on the clothes horse in front of a sunny window, and they will be less likely to keep you scratching all day.

Stock up at the chemist.

Anti-histamines and nasal sprays and a million different hay fever medications may be helpful, but there are also some natural remedies that might alleviate your symptoms. A tiny smear of Vaseline under your nose can stop pollen from entering the nasal passage. Saline solution for the eyes and for the nasal passage can also help. And from the supermarket, grab some honey, onion and garlic – all rumoured to help hay fever sufferers during peak season.

Start salt therapy sessions

Salt therapy is a natural therapy that may help relieve symptoms for hay fever sufferers. It’s certainly not a difficult process: sitting in a comfortable massage chair while dry pharmaceutical-grade salt is pumped through the air of the ‘salt cave’. Salt therapy may aid in clearing the lungs of pollens and allergens.

Breathe in some relief this hay fever season with salt therapy, and keep the pollen spores at bay. Best of luck to our sneezy friends for a nice, clear, symptom-free spring.

Salt therapy is a complementary therapy and is intended to be used alongside conventional medical treatment. Results may vary between clients and we recommend you discuss the use of salt therapy with your GP.

Have you ever given a bouquet of flowers to someone, only to be met with a sneezing fit? For some people, flowers in the home are just a hayfever attack waiting to happen. But no one should have to miss out on pretty petals this spring. For the love of gift-giving, we have compiled a list of the best flowers you can give an allergy sufferer, so that everyone can enjoy some beautiful blooms.

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are not only gorgeous in a variety of colours, but they are great for allergy sufferers. Low on pollen and high on petals, a bouquet of these beautiful flowers will make any house look like it’s straight out of a fancy home magazine.

Roses

Romantics of the world, breathe a sigh of relief! Roses are a popular flower for every occasion, and best of all, they are okay for most allergy sufferers. Though they do carry pollen, the pollen is unlikely to become airborne, so shouldn’t be too problematic in a sneezy househould.

Tulips

Just ask the Dutch: tulips are stunning. A beautiful bunch of bright tulips will bring joy to any room, even to someone who suffers from hayfever. With a low pollen count, and lots of gorgeous colous, tulips are a safe bet.

Orchids

There’s something about orchids; they are just… classy. Whether it’s because they are in so many waiting rooms, or the tender love and care it takes to grow them, orchids are an especially posh family of flowers. And best of all, nearly all species are low on pollen.

Cactus

If flowers are just too risky, there’s always a good ol’ catcus. Remember, they come in more varieties than just spiky, and most importantly of all, they are VERY easy to please. Lazy gardeners will love them.

Go on, give your sneezy friends a treat, with a low dose of pollen and a high dose of colour. If in doubt, check with your local florist about the pollen in the flower you choose, and your bouquet will be met with tears of joy instead of watery eyes. Flowers for the win!

This spring has brought some of the highest pollen counts in years.

In case you’re wondering how dire we are talking, here’s a little example. The Melbourne Pollen Count and Forecast classifies a ‘high’ day of pollen as 50 grass pollen grains per cubic metre. This past Friday, we reached 154 pollen grains per cubic metre.

A sneeze-fest death-trap nightmare, basically.

It’s all because of the rainy winter in Australia. Rain in winter = grassland growth in spring = crazy pollen counts in hayfever season.

The good news is… no, there’s not much good news for hayfever sufferers. So let’s just call the ‘only way forward news’. The only way forward for the people with the itchy eyes and the crusty faces and the constant feeling of being mid-sneeze, is to a) get one of the handy apps for the daily pollen count to see if it’s worth leaving the house, and b) try salt therapy to relive your symptoms.

Let’s do ‘a’ first.

There are a few handy apps for your smartphone that will tell you the chances of high sneezing each day. If you can’t find a specific pollen app that covers your area, some weather apps will have an inbuilt tab that does so. Find your favourite app or website, and check it every morning to see if… well, to see if you can just cancel your day, really. A pollen count of ‘extreme’ and over could mean a good ol’ day of Netflix and couch time.

However, if you have to leave the house, that brings us to ‘b’. Try salt therapy as an addition to your hay fever management. Salt therapy involves sitting in a ‘salt cave’ room at the therapy centre (where there is ABSOLUTELY NO POLLEN!), and breathing in the pharmaceutical grade salt that is pumped through the air. The natural properties of the salt help to clear the airways, decongest the lungs and nasal passages and may help relieve the symptoms of hay fever.

It’s a win-win. And the best bit? Escaping the pollen-ridden air outside for 45 mins.

Book in for a complimentary consultation at your closest Salts of the Earth centre and breathe better this spring!

Which of the seven dwarves do you relate to the most?
Happy? Dopey? Grumpy?
If you immediately yelled ‘SNEEZY!’ and then reached for the tissues, we can only assume you’re one of four million Aussies suffering from hay fever. The pollen season is just beginning. Holy sinuses, what can we DO?
Here’s a few natural tips that may bring relief (and can be combined with your choice of antihistamine medication concoctions).

1. Eat more onion and garlic.
Both onion and garlic have good antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties. Onion is especially high in quercetin, a natural antihistamine proven to reduce hay fever symptoms in sufferers, and has three times as much quercetin as kale, and ten times as much as broccoli. Some experts recommend eating them raw. But maybe only do that when you’re staying in for the night…

2. Dogs are not your friend.
Just kidding. Dogs are always your friend. But remember, at this time of year, dogs like to roll around in the grass A LOT. So if you’re petting a stranger’s dog, always remember to wash your hands thoroughly afterwards, or else you’ll end up with all kinds of allergens right in your eye.

3. Watch the pollen count.
If pollen is your enemy, keep a close eye on the daily pollen count. There are various websites (like Weatherzone, or Allergy.Org.Au) that will show you the pollen count in your area, as well as apps that have a handy indicator. If you really struggle with hay fever, you might be able to plan your activities around the good days and bad days. The high-pollen count days are a good excuse to stay in bed reading. All day.

4. Try salt therapy.
Salt therapy is a natural therapy that may relieve the symptoms of hay fever. It’s a relaxing process; sitting in a comfortable massage chair in the salt cave rooms, while dry pharmaceutical-grade salt is pumped through the air. The salt has natural properties that may help clean the lungs of pollens and allergens.

5. Shower before bed.
After a day out in the spring air, you can guarantee you’ve got tiny pollen-y particles covering your skin and hair. Have a shower before bed to wash away all the allergens and avoid the chance of being up all night, sneezing from outdoor allergens. While you’re at it, make sure you regularly wash your pillowcases too.

Spring may be pretty, but for some of us, it’s Hell on Earth. Try these remedies for a bit of relief, so that you can go from being the Sneezy dwarf to being Happy.

Spring is upon us. Can you hear it? Lambs bleating. Birds singing. Trees blowing in the gentle breeze. And what’s that noise?
Ah-ah-ah-CHOOOOOOOO.
Yep. Spring is definitely here. And so is hay fever.

If you are a sufferer of hay fever, you will know the horrors of a new spring. There are more than 10,000 species of grass throwing pollen at your nose. There are trees and flowers lurking around every corner, waiting to tickle your sinuses. Each gentles breeze brings a whole new wealth of allergens.

Fun times. Fun, fun times. But here’s the good news:
A very simple, enjoyable natural therapy may help alleviate symptoms and reduce the severity of the sneeze-y season. Salt therapy.
If you’re a sufferer of hay fever and haven’t tried salt therapy, this could be the relief you’ve been searching for. Salt therapy involves sitting in a comfortable massage chair in a relaxing room, while pharmaceutical grade salt is pumped through the air. Salt may help cleanse the airways of pollen, dust, spores and other allergens.

Before you are tempted to cut off your own nose just to stop it itching (we’ve all been there), give salt therapy a go. Think about it: how often would you get hay fever when spending a day at the beach? There’s something in that salty air. And if you can do it from the comfort of a massage chair, even better.
Happy spring season. Best of luck to you, sneezers.
